ESD and anti-static safety footwear

In some working environments, static electricity can pose risks. A small electrical discharge can damage equipment or cause a spark in an environment containing flammable substances. This can lead to unsafe situations. That is why safety shoes with antistatic properties or ESD protection are available. These shoes dissipate static electricity via the sole into the ground. This reduces the risk of an electric shock or a spark.

What is static electricity?

Static electricity is caused by friction, for example when materials rub against one another. This can cause an electrical charge to build up on the body or in clothing.

When that charge is released, you may feel a slight shock. In everyday life, this is usually harmless. However, in work environments with sensitive equipment or flammable substances, it can cause problems.

Anti-static safety shoes

Many safety shoes have antistatic properties. This means that the shoe can slowly dissipate electrical charge into the ground. The shoe’s resistance remains within a specific range. This prevents static electricity from building up to excessive levels. Antistatic properties are a requirement of many safety standards for safety footwear.

ESD safety shoes

ESD stands for Electrostatic Discharge. ESD safety shoes dissipate static electricity even more effectively than standard antistatic shoes. The shoe’s electrical resistance is maintained within a stricter range. This is particularly important in working environments with sensitive electronic equipment. Even a small discharge can cause damage to components or systems in such environments.

ESD and safety footwear in practice

In work environments where ESD protection is required, a comprehensive system is often used. In addition to safety footwear, flooring, workstations and clothing can also form part of ESD protection. Together, these measures ensure that static electricity is dissipated in a controlled manner and that equipment and processes remain protected.
